The video follows local people onto the land and sea as they perform traditional activities. Two versions of this video have been produced: a 14-minute version which dramatically captures the intensity and challenge of climate change, and a 42-minute version, which includes more in-depth observations such as the appearance of salmon and impacts on muskox and geese, science team interviews and archival footage.

This is a high-energy engaging, interactive performance that tours to Metro Vancouver elementary schools. It is also available as a DVD to schools outside our touring region at low cost. Kids will learn about positive actions they can take to offset climate change, specifically teaching them ways they can reduce carbon gas emissions. Suitable for grades K-7. 45 minutes. The show is targeted to intermediate students but brings lots of fun to primary classes too. In its first two years of touring, Keep Cool was seen by 45,000 children, who pledged online to reduce their carbon footprint by 17,000 tonnes. Normally, performances are sponsored by municipal governments and are free to schools. We are also creating online interactive videos (target date: May 2010).

During the program, students examine their family's energy use, the equivalent GHG emissions of common household devices, and their own personal behavior patterns. This enables them to make changes around the house to lower GHG emissions. The program complements the Federal Government’s Climate Change Plan and the One Tonne Challenge Program. DescriptionThe SHS Project is offered in partnership by the Sierra Youth Coalition and the Sierra Club BC Chapter. Sustainable High Schools is adapted from SYC's successful Sustainable Campuses Project. Both are youth-driven initiatives created to support school communities in envisioning, assessing and improving their level of ecological and social well-being. The Sustainable High Schools Project empowers students with the skills, tools, and resources to generate greater social equity, ecological integrity and economic accountability through class projects, policy creation, and infrastructure upgrades. The project supports youth in working with staff, administrators and parents to make their high school communities models of sustainability. The High School Sustainability Assessment Framework (HSSAF)provides a balanced approach to measure the social and ecological well-being of your high school community. The project offers clubs, classes, and individual students the SHS Kit, mentorship, presentations, and guidance to create the following : Sustainability Advisory Committee: Work with other student leaders, teachers & administrators to envision and create the kind of school youd like to be a part of. Sustainability Assessment: Use 30 indicators to measure the sustainability of your school! Action planning & Implementation: Create projects and policies to improve your schools sustainability. Join the Sustainable High Schools Network! Students and teachers working for sustainability across the province and country are starting to send us their challenges, success stories, and updates on how the SHS project is going at their school. We will be posting profiles of all the participating schools so that you can see some real-life examples of what can be done, how to do it, and who to contact to get advice and inspiration. We are also collecting emails of people who want to join our Sustainable High Schools list serve or receive a monthly e-newsletter from the Green Street Youth Engagement Program. Finally, you can meet those involved by joining our facebook "Sustainable High Schools" group.

DescriptionSustainable Schools is a project of Check Your Head, a youth-driven organization that educates young people on global issues, with a focus on local action. The Sustainable Schools team works with Vancouver schools to take coordinated action on environmental and social justice issues. Currently, we are working with students and staff from several families of schools in the Vancouver area to create a vision for sustainability in their school, followed by a unique action plan for attainable projects and campaigns, based on the ideas and focus areas identified. Through our classroom sustainability resources, workshops and connections to community organizations, we support each school in their directed action, making important connections by integrating sustainability education into classrooms. We have seen great successes with the project including the installation of solar panels in King George Secondary and a student-built compost system at Lord Byng Secondary. There are all kinds of awesome and impressive projects already underway in Vancouver schools and our e-newsletter helps to share these experiences and create a connected effort toward sustainability in our schools! Sound interesting? Check out our website for more info and give us a shout - we’d love to chat!

DescriptionDeveloped by the Union of Concerned Scientists, this fun, interactive game with great graphics and sound effects tests students’ knowledge of how consumer choices affect the environment. As they answer questions and 'shop green' the Envirometer gauges the cumulative impact of their choices. The centrepoint on the Envirometer represents the impact of an average American household (and probably Canadian) - at the end of the game they can compare this average to their own impact on air quality, water quality, natural habitats, and the sustainability of our climate. Although some of the questions are for the US, most are generic and equally applicable to Canada.

DescriptionThis is the companion site for the NOVA program Warnings from the Ice, broadcast on April 21, 1998. Over the last 50 years, the Antarctic Peninsulas coastal ice has been gradually disappearing. Scientists are beginning to wonder if we are on the verge of a great flood that may consume the world's coastlines. In the program, scientists head to Antarctica in the race to answer questions and heed the warnings from the ice. The web site includes a clickable ice-core timeline which shows the information frozen in layers over the past 300,000 years about our global environment. Also included is information about Antarctica's frozen environment and wildlife inhabitants, terminology describing the Antarctic landscape; an exploration of the possible consequences of the melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet; and an interactive quiz. Resources and a Teacher's Guide (including a classroom activity lesson plan and ideas from other teachers) are also online.
