September 2009

PHEV ’09 - Plug-In Hybrids and Electric Vehicles Conference and Trade Show, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Montreal, Quebec

Monday, September 28 to Wednesday, September 30
The Conference Program will be of particular value to those operating or planning to operate Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles and Electric Vehicles in conditions such as found in Canada's extreme climate, the military and remote communities.

The year 2009 will be a turning point in both actions and events in all regions of the globe for the promotion of electric vehicles of all forms and for all modes of transportation. The current energy and environmental issues are serious for all aspects of society but particularly challenging in the field of transportation. Our economies and life-styles have become dependent on extensive transportation networks that rely on cheap energy supplied almost exclusively by fossil fuels, a commodity that is now accepted as declining in supply while the transportation demands continue to increase.

Like many other jurisdictions, Canada has challenges and opportunities in dealing with electric vehicles. Canada has undeveloped renewable resources that can be used to substitute liquid fossil fuels with new electrical generation. Our climate dictates that the electric vehicles must live up to the challenges of our severe winter conditions as well as hot and humid summers. While most of our citizens live in urban areas with daily commutes well within the current range of electric vehicle power storage technologies, our inter-provincial and international commercial activities also require vehicles capable of long distance travels. Electric drive vehicles are also considered for use in remote communities, the military and the lunar space rover program.

The program for PHEV ’09 - Plug-In Hybrids and Electric Vehicles will address the issues electric vehicles face when operating in extreme weather and other conditions and will be of value to delegates from Canada, northern US states and other countries with similar operating conditions. We urge you to register for this unique event.

Recipes for Disaster, Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.)

Thursday, April 16
DOXA’s Documentary Film Series screens Recipes for Disaster

Thursday, April 16th, 7pm @ Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.)

Admission: $10

Tickets: On sale NOW For more information go to www.doxafestival.ca

The third and final film of the DOXA Documentary Film Series leading up to the festival in May.

Recipes for Disaster follows a young Anglo-Finnish family as they rid themselves of all oil-based products for a year. The challenge proves to be more emotionally difficult than the family anticipates and John, father and instigator of the oil fast, must find a balance between living oil-free and keeping a functional family.

Filmmaker John Webster undertook this oil diet to see what happens when individuals take responsibility for their contributions to climate change. During this year-long fast, the family remains in mainstream society, continuing their suburban lives. But the emotional strain the diet puts on the family offers more drama and opportunity for self-analysis than predicted, and disaster sets in. As John teeters on the brink of extremism, his militancy threatens to pull the family apart. He must negotiate the fine line between fanaticism and staying true to his values.

Filmmaker John Webster, will be doing a Q&A session via Skype after the viewing.
