2006 CONFERENCE OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES, Richmond, BC
Thursday, October 5 to Friday, October 6
BC's coastal communities have weathered a storm surge of change over the past fifteen years. Is the coast clear? What does the forecast look like for coastal fisheries, forestry, treaty making and health care? What is the role of information and communications technology in our future? How will climate change affect our communities?Join BC's Coastal Community Network this year as they ask, "Communities Weathering Change: Is the Coast Clear?" The CCN's 12th Annual Conference of Coastal Communities will take place on October 5 and 6, 2006, at Richmond's Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel.
The CCN's conference will feature a special panel presentation on climate change and coastal communities. Coastal communities in British Columbia are susceptible to the impacts of climate change on infrastructure, property, natural resources and ecosystems. This panel, organized by the BC Branch of the Canadian Climate Impact and Adaptation Research Network (CCIARN BC), will bring together speakers from diverse backgrounds including First Nations, government and academia. Topics covered will include knowledge and perception of climate change in coastal communities, examining potential impacts to infrastructure, an overview of coastal fisheries issues from a scientific and First Nations perspective, and discussion of approaches to planning and encouraging dialogue on how coastal communities may adapt and prepare.
This is the only coast-wide forum in BC that brings together coastal community leaders and citizens, and representatives of senior government, industry and organizations, to explore the critical issues facing our communities and work towards solutions for economic diversification and long-term community sustainability. We encourage you to join us there.

Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) forums for the Vancouver's Building Design Community (June 29th, July 21st, and August 11th), Vancouver, BC
Thursday, June 29
Each forum will open with a presentation of two building evaluations, and will compare the buildings' design intent with the evaluated performance. You will see results from building occupant surveys, utility analyses, and measurements of the buildings' thermal comfort, lighting, indoor air quality and acoustics.Through these forums we invite your feedback on the Protocol used for these evaluations. Are the right questions being asked? Does the feedback received through the evaluations answer the design questions that you have? After the forums, the Protocol will be finalized and placed in the public domain for the use of the design community. The goal of the overall project is to facilitate rapid improvement in design of comfortable, low-energy buildings through the use of building performance evaluation.
Continental breakfast, included in the participation fee, starts at 7:30 am. Participation fee is $25 per forum or $50 for all three. (Students: $10 per forum, $20 for all three.)

THE 2nd HYDRO POWER FOR TODAY CONFERENCE - Policy Stimulating Hydropower Development, Hangzhou, China
Saturday, April 22 to Tuesday, April 25
Gone are the days when the technology and the engineers predominantly shaped hydropower development. Nowadays, governments, NGOs, development organizations, lobbyists are all instrumental in formulating policies which promote or hinder hydropower development.Policies relating to hydropower are shaped by many factors. Energy demands, environmental concerns, economic interests, water resource management and balancing the needs of the various stakeholders all influence today’s hydropower policies. As such, developing sound holistic policies that suitably address all relevant issues can become extremely complex. Furthermore, policymakers are faced with the challenge of putting forward policies which to be effective in the years to come, must attempt to predict or accommodate fluctuating circumstances and priorities.
In this regard, the past experiences from countries in varied stages of industrial development can provide an invaluable resource. By exchanging success stories and lessons learnt, countries with substantial experience in hydropower development may lead the way for those with burgeoning infrastructure. Conversely, fresh innovative approaches may provide inspiration to countries with tired, antiquated policies.
By bringing together hydropower developers, policymakers, think tanks, and representatives of the various stakeholders, The 2nd HYDRO POWER FOR TODAY Conference will provide the platform to discuss, exchange and formulate effective, sustainable hydropower policies, which address the needs of all concerned parties. Top government officials from China’s Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Commerce will be invited to share China’s views and experiences on hydropower development.
When formulating new policies, it is important to bear in mind the following facts:
- There are still 1.6 billion people in the world with no access to electricity, almost all of them living in developing countries
- Poverty is overall the biggest contributor to environment degradation
- In China, 70% of dust, 90% of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and 67% of nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions are from coal combustion. 45% of total coal consumption is used for electricity generation purposes
- 23% of total technically feasible hydropower potential is exploited in China, 82% in USA, 65% in Canada, 73% in Germany, but only 5% in Africa and 13% in Asia as a whole
The 2 nd Hydro Power for Today Conference is co-organized by International Center on Small Hydro Power (IC-SHP), International Centre for Hydropower (ICH) and endorsed by International Energy Agency (IEA) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). We cordially invite you to Hangzhou in April 2006, the best time in a year to visit this picturesque city.
